Background of the Study
Mobile banking is a vital channel for financial service delivery in Nigeria, where increasing smartphone penetration has accelerated digital transformation. Heritage Bank recently undertook a comprehensive mobile application redesign to address usability issues and enhance the overall digital banking experience. The redesign focuses on streamlining navigation, reducing load times, and incorporating user-friendly features such as biometric authentication and personalized dashboards (Okafor, 2023). By applying modern design principles and leveraging customer feedback, Heritage Bank aims to eliminate friction in the digital banking process and encourage a higher rate of adoption among its customers. The revamped interface provides clear calls to action and simplified transaction flows that cater to both tech-savvy and less digitally experienced users. Research suggests that improved mobile application usability is closely correlated with increased digital banking adoption, higher customer satisfaction, and greater operational efficiency (Adeniyi, 2024). Despite these potential benefits, challenges remain in ensuring consistent performance across diverse devices and network conditions. Continuous updates and customer education initiatives are essential to maximize the benefits of the redesign. Heritage Bank’s efforts are thus part of a broader strategy to enhance digital engagement and strengthen its competitive position in the Nigerian banking sector.

Statement of the Problem
Although Heritage Bank’s mobile application redesign has led to improvements in user interface and functionality, digital banking adoption has not increased to the anticipated levels. Customer feedback reveals that while the new design is more visually appealing, some users—particularly those with older devices or limited digital literacy—still encounter difficulties navigating the app (Eze, 2024). Issues such as inconsistent performance across different operating systems and network-dependent delays further limit adoption. Moreover, the complexity of certain enhanced security features, although necessary for protection, may discourage some users from fully engaging with the platform. These challenges indicate a gap between the redesigned application’s potential and the actual user experience, necessitating a deeper investigation into the factors hindering widespread digital adoption. Identifying and addressing these issues is crucial for Heritage Bank to fully leverage its mobile redesign investment and drive higher digital banking usage.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the impact of mobile application redesign on digital banking adoption at Heritage Bank.

  2. To identify technical and user-experience barriers that limit full adoption.

  3. To propose strategies for further optimizing the mobile app to increase digital banking usage.

Research Questions

  1. How does the mobile application redesign affect digital banking adoption at Heritage Bank?

  2. What technical and usability challenges hinder full adoption of the redesigned app?

  3. What measures can optimize the mobile app to drive greater digital banking usage?

Research Hypotheses

H₀: Mobile application redesign does not significantly increase digital banking adoption at Heritage Bank.

H₁: Mobile application redesign significantly increases digital banking adoption at Heritage Bank.

H₀: Technical and usability challenges do not significantly affect user adoption.

H₁: Technical and usability challenges significantly hinder user adoption.

H₀: Additional optimization strategies will not further boost digital banking adoption.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on the redesigned mobile application of Heritage Bank and its effect on digital banking adoption. Data will be gathered from usage analytics, customer surveys, and interviews with IT and customer service teams. Limitations include network variability, device differences, and potential self-reporting bias.

Definitions of Terms
